Grapefruit Back to List
Originally brought to Florida in 1823 from the Caribbean by a Frenchman named Count Odette Philippe, grapefruit production in Florida has grown to be one of the states largest crops. Domestic production represents over 90 % of the grapefruit we consume and Florida contributes over half of the nation's crop. California, Arizona and Texas are the other significant domestic producers. Imports are light and come mainly from the Bahamas, Mexico, and Israel.

The main varieties are Ray, Rio Red, Flame, Star Ruby, Marsh Ruby and the white, Marsh Seedless.

Favorite varieties are the Star Ruby from all areas, but particularly the Texas Rio Star, and Florida's Indian River Marsh Ruby.
